Chapter Five: Captured
Present Time
"I still wonder why anybody would want the Race gone," Kelly said a few days later.
Amy and Kelly were walking back from the mall in the late afternoon; Amy liked to visit the bookstore often to skim over either the books in the fantasy section or in the manga section. But after a while of waiting on her, Kelly sometimes had to literally drag her away from them because she always found Amy with her nose deep in a fantasy book. That was one of Amy's perks; she was a fantasy freak since the fourth grade, along with being manga reader and a video gamer. Amy was a bit moody after this trip to the mall; Kelly whisked her away from the fantasy section after a few minutes before she could be buried in a book.
"How should I know?" Amy replied grumpily.
Kelly gave her eccentric friend a wry smile. "You're mad at me, aren't you?"
"I wanted to read at least part of that new book."
"Amy, you do know that the library is used for reading, not the bookstore, right?"
"I know," Amy replied innocently, "But the closest library here barely has any fantasy or manga books...."
She was suddenly cut off short as she noticed Bree running headlong towards them down the sidewalk. She was barely out of breath when she finally reached them.
"Bree, I thought running that fast was bad for you," Kelly spoke up.
"I know, but it’s urgent,” she gasped, bent over leaning with her hands on her knees, “You have to come quickly. A minor brushfire has broken out near Ramona in the east of the county a few hours ago.”
“A brushfire?” Amy repeated, now acting serious.
“Wha—? Wait a minute, Amy….” Kelly replied suspiciously.
“What?”
“Don’t you think this is a little strange?”
“What is?”
“This brushfire. We rarely get fires this time of the season. We get them in the fall with the Santa Ana winds…..”
“So?”
“Amy, it’s spring! I have a bad feeling this has that boy written all over it….”
“All we have to do is put it out. What could happen?”
She ran off after Bree without another word, leaving Kelly looking concerned.
Amy, Kelly, and a few other choice members of the Club quickly arrived at the scene within half an hour. It was a rather small fire, so they quickly released a few little water crafts onto the ground. The crafts were enclosed to protect its pilot from smoke or flames. Large nozzles were on the back and the front while the pilot could rotate the craft in any direction as it shot water from the nozzles to douse a certain area in water.
Amy liked to be apart of the action, even though she was supposed to be a Leader. Kelly, unfortunately, didn’t want her to go in the water craft, but Amy was not persuaded.
“Amy, I think the fire’s out now,” she heard Kelly say in a small ear piece. “The other members succeeded in the rest of the area. It’s time to head back now.”
“Hold on,” she answered, squinting through the water-covered windshield of the craft. She could see a little white smoke rising from the bottom of a nearby hill through the darkness. “I think there are still some hotspots.”
“Then leave them. They’ll burn out eventually.”
“Yeah, and have two to three neighborhoods burn down if they start up again,” Amy replied sarcastically.
“Amy, no! Just leave them.”
But she wasn’t listening; she had taken out the ear piece and set it on the dashboard of the craft before scrambling in the back behind her seat for a water pack. Once strapping on the pack, she quickly unlatched the windshield, which swung upward, and she jumped out nimbly. There was still a little smoke now, but there was still something smoldering down the nearby hillside. As Kelly’s voice still issued from the ear piece, Amy started to make her way through the smoldering brush towards the edge of the hill.
At the same time, a young raven-haired teen on another far off hill lowered a pair of night-vision binoculars and grinned, his eyes sparking with excitement, and continued to watch her small figure that was a little red dot among the blackened hillside.
Amy widened her way down the blackened hill, and slid to a stop at the bottom. It was barely burnt here, but she just quickly quenched any hot spots with water. After a few moments, she slipped off her water pack and leaned wearily against a nearby tree that was only burnt at the bottom of its trunk, surveying the damage. She smiled a little; the fire didn’t do much damage, nor did it threaten any property nearby. Noticing a small birds nest that was on the ground by the tree, she gently picked it up to put it back up in the tree. And this was all just a usual work day for a World Hero. Unfortunately at that moment, all of that was going to change.
Just as she picked up the nest, a bright green laser burst shot from somewhere behind her, smashing through both eggs in the nest. Amy instantly dropped the nest in surprise, and whirled around. Someone snickered coldly, making her shiver.
“Well, well. Looks like my little disaster attracted the one member I need. The little famed World Hero….”
She could tell the voice belonged to a boy, but it was too sharp. She couldn’t make out who the boy was; not only was he hidden in the shadows, but the little smoke left from the fire wasn’t helping either.
“Y-Your disaster?” she stuttered nervously.
“Yes, Amy. I started the fire to draw you out, knowing that your little coastal hometown is very prone to fires in its eastern part.”
This was bad. Whoever the boy was, he knew a lot about her. But then again, so did the entire world; everyone knew about her. But he knew a little too much about her. A bead of sweat rolled down Amy’s cheek, and it had nothing to do with the temperature. Whatever situation she had gotten in, it looked like it was going to get worse. The figure snickered again, stepping into the moonlight that instantly lit up his features, making his already pale face look white as a vampire and his green eyes glow brightly, which were way too familiar. He was wearing a malicious smirk on his face, while his hands were behind him.
“L-Ludevec….” She stammered, taking a small step back as she recognized him from the profile Brendan found a while back.
He simpered a little at this. “Hmm, so you do know about me, then….”
“Y-You don’t know who you’re dealing with, do you?!” she shot back, her voice a little stronger now as her serious mood kicked in.
“Actually, I do. Now wouldn’t you consider a peaceful surrender before you really get hurt?”
Yeah, right! Amy thought and in one quick move, she fired a beam of magic directly at her attacker, but he moved swiftly out of the way of its path.
“Tch, I didn’t think you would,” he sneered, “Your kind can’t surrender to anything, can you?”
She tried to build up another energy ball, but he was quicker; he had something pointing directly at her a moment later.
“I didn’t want to use this, but you leave me no choice. Sleep tight….”
Before she could react, something stuck to her neck. Her vision blurred as she swayed woozily and collapsed to the ground. Just before she slumped to the ground, she was able to release the energy ball at him. After that, she couldn’t move; whatever struck her was paralyzing her entire body.
As her attacker fired, her shot came straight for him. He tried to move out of her shot’s way, but he was a moment to late. Her shot hit him squarely in the stomach, knocking him backwards.
“Oww….” he groaned, propping himself up on his elbows, “Dammit, I wasn’t expecting that. Even with magic, she hits pretty hard for a girl.”
Ha, it serves you right for messing with a World Hero, especially me, Amy wanted to say as she glared angrily at him from on the ground, but her mouth didn’t obey her; all she could do with it was breathe. A few moments later, she blacked out as the sedative in the dart overtook her system.
Ludevec crouched beside her, carefully pulling out the small dart from her neck.
“Excellent, she’s out cold,” he smirked, feeling her pulse, “But I’m surprised she was easy to take down with just one dart. I thought I would have to use one or two more because of her magic”
“But why did you shoot one at her?” Minibot asked as he jumped to the ground behind him, “I thought you were going to use them as a last resort.”
“I wanted her to go quietly without attracting any attention, but apparently she didn’t want to. It’s one of her Race’s rules; the members aren’t supposed to surrender or give up to anything.”
“Why are you cleaning her wound, though?”
“I need her to be in a perfect condition to use her abilities. Get her into the ship.”
Minibot immediately picked her up. “So are we leaving now?”
“No, in the morning. You know how I hate flying at night.”
Once wrapping himself in a towel after a short shower, Ludevec quickly flipped on a small screen near the mirror. The small screen flickered on, showing Amy still lying on the floor out cold. He smirked a little. Perfect: the sedation dart was still in effect and would probably last a while longer….
Something suddenly fluttered through his mind as he stared at the screen. Was this right? It didn’t feel right to him. He was literally kidnapping her just to use her ability…..to use her as a tool. It felt too criminal; frankly, he hated acting criminally like this. Maybe he shouldn’t use her—?
At this thought, he suddenly cursed under his breath, rubbing the bridge of his nose. No, he wasn’t going to let his feelings get to him like this. He had been working on this plan for too long: he wasn’t going to turn back now. Besides, from the results of the research he had been doing a while back, the only thing for his plan to be completely flawless and with no failures he would have to use magic, which was something that came out of a fairy tale. But the only person in the world who had it was Amy, even if she was part of the Race. He could tell there was going to be difficulty with her later on; even though she acted extremely gullible, she wasn’t going to be easily convinced to using her ability in his plan, gullible or not.
“Minibot,” he suddenly called, flipping off the screen and started to dry his hair.
Minibot poked his head in the doorway a moment later. “What?”
“I need you to keep an eye on her tonight. The dart is still working, but it will probably wear out soon. If she wakes up, tell me……and try to get her to eat something.”
“Why?”
“I need her to stay alive, for now, and in a healthy condition. She’s useless to me if she dies. She’ll probably refuse any food, but at least try to make her eat something.”
In the early hours of the following morning, Amy stirred a little. Her entire body was aching, including her head. A large headache was pounding against her skull, causing her to lose focus. She didn’t know where she was or what was happening. There was just too much pain in her head. She attempted to say something, but the only thing that came out of her mouth was a short moan.
“Mmmph….”
Someone answered to it. “Oh, you’re awake....”
It sounded like a child. Deciding to see them directly, she finally opened her eyes.....and jumped in surprise. Instead of a child, she saw the opposite; two huge, bright neon green eyes, like an insect, were staring at her curiously, its metal head cocked to one side.
“H-Huh?” she muttered wearily.
“You’ve been out for a while; I was worried you would be in a worse condition because of the dart.”
A dart?! Is that why she felt like she had been hit by a car?! She finally noticed the rest of the creature’s body, but wasn’t exactly like a creature that she would imagine in one of her fantasy novels. No, this wasn’t a creature. Its body looked more robotic than ever, with four long, skinny metallic legs on each of its sides and two of them in its front that had large black claw-like fingers. It was some kind of small robot; a spider-like robot. Something was stinging on her neck and she suddenly felt a tiny pad of cloth taped to her skin, guessing that was probably where the dart hit her. Amy cautiously lifted up her arm where her watch should be, hoping she was still in contact with the Club. It was still there, but something else was missing.....
“W-Where’s my stone?!”
“Master Ludevec had to take it away so you wouldn’t use it anymore. He doesn’t want you playing around with it.”
The name struck her like a lighting bolt. She suddenly remembered what had happened to her earlier; she had been captured. That explains why she was here. And how did he know that she had the stone?
“H-He knows about the stone?!”
The way the robot reacted to this, Amy could have sworn he would have smiled if he had a mouth instead of tiny metal fangs.
“He knows everything. And he always finds out.....”
“.....Especially when somebody isn’t doing what I’ve told them to do,” a sharp voice suddenly answered coldly with a slight hint of annoyance. The robot jumped in surprise and moved away nervously. Ludevec was leaning against the doorway, his arms folded, drumming his fingers impatiently on his arm. His eyes followed the robot suspiciously as he backed away.
“I-I was just checking on her, Master,” Minibot muttered timidly, looking at the floor.
“Didn’t I tell you to go watch the controls?” he snapped, “I don’t want to go off course!”
Minibot flinched for a moment and then scurried past him quickly. Amy heard Ludevec mutter “Idiot,” under his breath before turning in her direction, his scowl now replaced with an arrogant smirk. Time for him to be intimidating towards his hostage.
“You’re finally awake?” he began, straightening up, “Maybe that paralyzing dart was a little too strong for you.”
She let out an angry snarl. “Ludevec! You’re the one who started that earthquake on my city several months ago!”
He simpered maliciously again. “That was just a tester. I wanted to see how strong you were.” He then frowned in disgust as he added, “But then Kate failed to take over your position......”
“Y-You put her up to that?! Why?!”
“One: I wanted to see how long it would take to bring down your Race with her in position, and two: I needed more info on you, and three: I found out that you were the only one in the world with magic, which is exactly what I need to complete my plan for invasion.”
“Of what?!”
“What else am I supposed to get control over?”
Amy already guessed it as he looked at her smugly. “That’s why you captured me?! To use my abilities for world domination?!”
“Aren’t you the one with the magic in the Race?” he responded placidly.
“Yeah”
“Then you’re going to be using them to help with the invasion later.”
“I’m not helping! I’m supposed to save the world, not invade it!”
“Very, well. If you want it that way, then I’ll see how well you do against my Spiderbots once we get back. If you defeat them, I’ll let you go. But if you don’t defeat them, you’re with me.”
As soon as they were back, Ludevec sent the robots onto her as soon as she appeared in the room. She dodged one by skidding out of the way and then aimed at one of them hitting it in the middle and knocking it to the ground. The other two grabbed her, but she broke free until the other she had knocked over lunged at her again. This time, its grip was so strong she couldn’t break free. A strong electric wave suddenly shocked her; she was left gasping heavily on the floor.
Ludevec grinned. “You know, I was expecting you to be a lot stronger than that. But then again, usually girls aren’t that strong as boys.”
Amy’s hands clenched into fists as she stared at the ground, feeling the urge to kick him if she wasn’t weak at that moment. But girls’ kicks are a lot stronger than you think!
“Put her in the cell I’ve assigned her,” he commanded the robots, which immediately scurried away with her, “I’m not entirely ready to use her yet.”
The robots brought her to an unusual cell, leaving her rubbing her left forearm where the robots’ grip was too tight. She looked around the room only realizing it had two rooms and only one had a twin-sized cot (the other was a bathroom). Amy collapsed onto the bed, her head in hers hands, rubbing her forehead as the headache pounded against it. She was weary from the fight, but an urgent video had to be sent to the Club. That had to be taken care of before she could fall asleep.
Kelly and Brendan were staring at the screen in confusion. Amy was nowhere to be found; she didn’t come back to the Club after the fire last night like she had said she was, and hadn’t come in that morning. Kelly had tried to call her, but she wasn’t answering the phone, and her communicator seemed to be disconnected. But they had finally found something from her that might explain what happened; they were going over a short video that had been activated on her watch.
“Wait……zoom in on that,” Kelly suddenly spoke up, pointing to one part of the screen. They couldn’t tell exactly what happened, considering it was dark when the video was activated. Brendan quickly typed in something and the picture grew. There was a dim face in the background from where Amy was standing and the face looked familiar, especially when the figure stepped into the moonlight; they had long dark hair, but they could clearly see bright green eyes. Brendan quickly ran a search on the picture and they came up with the profile from last week.
“Oh my god…..” Kelly gasped in surprise. “She’s been captured?!”
“Are you serious?!” Maggie’s voice snickered from behind. She and Lyle had just appeared in the room. “Wow, that’s a first! She actually has gotten herself into trouble already!”
Kelly just glared at her.
“What?” Maggie answered to her glare, “Is it that bad?”
“It’s bad,” said Brendan, nodding and showed the profile. It was the same dark-haired teen from before.
“Are you saying that it’s him who’s kidnapped her?”
“He must have planned this entire thing…..”
“What?”
“It all fits….the earthquake, Kate taking over her position and now the fire ……it all fits! He was planning this from the start!”
Kelly stared for a moment at the screen in thought, and then suddenly hurried from the room.
“Wait, Kelly, where are you going?!” Brendan called after her.
“I’m going back to that sight where she was taken,” she answered, stopping for a moment and turning around. “Maybe there’s a clue there that might help us.”
She turned around again and disappeared. Brendan, Lyle, and Maggie exchanged looks.
“Should we follow after her? Maybe we could help….” Lyle asked in worry.
“Wow, that’s probably the first time I’ve heard you say something in a while, Lyle,” Maggie commented playfully. Lyle gave a weak smile, turning a shade of pink. “…But yeah, I’ve been dying for some action like this anyways.”
Kelly quickly zigzagged her way down the path through the burnt area of the hills, heading towards the spot where she had last scene Amy heading to. The area was still smoldering slightly from the night before, but luckily the fire was already out. There had to be something there, something that could help them find her…..
As she got to the bottom of the hill, she finally noticed something leaning against a nearby burnt tree. It was Amy’s water pack. There was also a small round burn mark halfway up the trunk, but the fire only reached the base of the trunk. That was one thing that was suspicious. But more importantly, why did she take the water pack off, and yet, why was it here?
She realized there were footprints on the ground. Crouching down, she carefully examined them, recognizing them as Amy’s. They headed towards the tree, stopped, and suddenly backed up. There was another set of foot prints. Someone else was here. From the way they were set, whoever else was here came from the shadows in the nearby brush. She then noticed two smashed bird eggs next to the tree, their nest scattered nearby. Both of the eggs weren’t burnt, which meant someone killed them. Amy wouldn’t hurt anything, let alone kill it. That explained the burn mark on the tree. Someone had shot something, blasting through the eggs and hitting the tree.
He was here! She concluded. Brendan was right! He planned this…..
Then she noticed another strange set of prints. They looked like someone was walking with eight skinny small legs. They lead straight to where it looked like Amy had fallen down. There was a gut wrenching feeling in her stomach. She was hoping that she wasn’t injured. He fired something at her…..and she fell……
Some strange figure could have made this other set of prints. A spider? But these eight-legged prints were too big for a spider; a spider’s leg span could never be two feet in length. Either it wasn’t an insect, or it was a completely alien-like spider.
Whatever this boy wants with her, he’s starting to seem peculiar…..
Something suddenly glinted nearby. It was Amy’s communicator, with a small green light blinking gently. She carefully picked it up and its screen suddenly flickered on as a familiar face appeared on it, but it wasn’t Amy.
“Well, well. If it isn’t Amy’s little friend,” the figure snickered. He was reclining in a chair, his fingertips together. “If you’re wondering where your precious Leader is, I have her.”
“Let her go!”
The figure snickered again. “Oh, no, I won’t let her go. No yet, at least. She’s too useful for me at the moment.”
“Who are you?”
“Don’t you already know?” he grinned widely, “I thought you received her video clip from before…..”
“I-It wasn’t that helpful,” she stammered hesitantly. They had a feeling it was him when they got the video, but they weren’t exactly sure yet. She was just waiting for him to clarify himself now, and she got it.
“Fine, since we might be seeing each other rather soon, I’ll let you know,” he answered, “Ludevec Durevic, at your service….or not. Considering I have your Leader, I’ll make you a deal. If you can find her in twenty days, I’ll release her. If not, she’s with me.”
“Twenty days?”
“That’s all I’m giving you. Take it or leave it. Or do you want much less time than that?”
“Fine!”
“Very well, I’ll be waiting. It’s been such a pleasure meeting you…”
“Been?”
“Yes, been,” he snickered, “If you didn’t notice before, I left a little present behind…..”
He vanished from the screen and was suddenly replaced by a small message that was flashing self-destruct. A low rapid beeping was suddenly heard.
Kelly swore, dropping the communicator and started to run as fast as she could from it. She scrambled roughly up the burnt hillside just as the communicator went off, the blast throwing her over the hill. She hit the ground hard.
“Kelly, what the hell happened down there?!” Maggie exclaimed, running to her as Brendan and Lyle caught up with them. Kelly propped herself up onto her hands wearily.
“It’s him,” she breathed heavily, trying to catch her breath, “It’s definitely him. He’s given us twenty days to get her back.”
“Why do I have a bad feeling this is going to get a lot worse?” Brendan added, exchanging glances with everyone.
Ludevec leaned back in the chair behind his desk with a satisfied smirk, his fingertips together. That little blast should have shown them who they were dealing with now. This was just too easy; after watching Amy’s little battle against his robots, her powers and agility were exactly what he needed. He suddenly frowned slightly; he was expecting Amy to be a lot stronger in that last battle. However, maybe after training her powers a bit more, she would be stronger. Once that happened, invading will be just around the corner until he put the finishing touches on his plan.
Fingering Amy’s wristwatch in one hand, he gazed absent-minded at her profile on his laptop. He had succeeded in hacking into her watch to disconnect her from the Club, but at the same time he found that she had sent that video clip to them. He wasn’t expecting her to have a video clip of their little battle when he ambushed her, but he came up with a back-up plan of the negotiations with her friends through the communicator he left behind that he set to self-destruct. He gave a wry smile at this, amused. Although it was a habit of his, he liked scheming against others; it was just so fun to him, let alone too easy.
His eyes flickered upward at the large screen in the opposite side of the room. One window on the screen had a tab on Amy, and it was showing that she was beginning to stir a little in her room.
Finally she’s awake….
Rising from the chair, he disappeared out of the room. It was time to let her know what he had in store for her.
When Amy awoke, she found herself resting on her back and gazed out of the window nearby. Night had already fallen, so she didn’t know how long she had been asleep. Probably for a few hours, she figured.
A sound at the door made her revert out of her daze and she sat up. The door slid open and she was half expecting another robot, but it was Ludevec instead.
“It’s about time you woke up,” he said coolly.
“What do you want?” she answered dully, returning to look out the window again.
He simpered a little at her mood. She was already depressed.
“You sent that video to your Club, didn’t you?” he answered, getting right to the point of why he was there.
“So?”
“I also sent one explaining to your friends about a little challenge….”
This caught her attention; she looked around at him in suspicion and fear.
“What challenge?” she replied, suspicious.
“They can rescue you in twenty days or you’re with me until I find that you’re no longer useful.”
“And what will you do with me if I’m not useful to you anymore?” she replied in the same glum tone.
“You shouldn’t worry about that yet,” he answered coldly, giving a malicious smile which made her blanch. “In the meantime, you’ll be training your magic and I’ll be directing you. We’ll begin tomorrow.”
He tossed her watch back and she quickly reacted to catch it. “I’ve disconnected your communications from your Club, so it’s futile for you to try to escape.”
He turned to leave for the door, but paused long enough to add one last point.
“I suggest you get plenty of rest for tomorrow, and at least eat something,” he added, noticing the plate of food that she hadn’t touched by the door. “It’s not poisoned if you must know. If I wanted to kill you, I would’ve killed you already. I can’t have you malnourished or ill, or you’re useless to me.”
He finally turned and disappeared from the doorway, and Amy watched with disdain as the door slid shut again.
Great. I’m stuck here now with no technology or ways of communication with the Club at all, she thought bitterly, letting herself fall back on the bed again.
She looked at her watch and quickly examined it. It was true; she was disconnected from the Race. And her stone was in the wrong hands, but Ludevec wouldn’t be able to work it because the stone only granted wishes that were beneficial for good, not evil. Knowing that her powers couldn’t even help her in this situation, she extinguished an energy ball by clenching her fist.
A low tapping aroused her late that night. At first she thought it was a tree branch, but after remembering that she was two or three stories up, she quickly sat up and found a small black owl tapping on the window pane with its beak. She could barely see it because it blended in with the darkness outside, but she could make out big, golden-amber eyes and a white note clamped in a beak. She quietly slid open the window and the little owl hopped inside, hooting softly. Taking the note, she anxiously flipped it open and with a relief, she recognized Kelly’s handwriting:
Amy, Since your watch seems to be cut off from us, this is the only possible way left of communicating with you for now. The owl—his name is Noctol—belongs to Lyle, who I never knew had a pet owl and you probably didn’t either. We are desperately trying to find your whereabouts, but it seems that Ludevec has covered his tracks awfully well, so it’s hard to locate you at the moment. We will be sending notes like this to you every other day if we can. If you get this, please reply back immediately. Can you give us a clue to where you might be?
Kelly
Amy quickly scribbled a short note on the reverse side of the paper:
Kelly, Thank god I can communicate with you and everyone else! Ludevec is planning to use my magic for an invasion plan, and I’m really worried at the moment, not only because of that, but also I don’t seem to have any way of escaping. I’m sorry to say that I’m not exactly sure where I am……somewhere in Europe is all I know. That’s probably a tiny clue for you, but it probably won’t get you anywhere. Please hurry! You only have 20 days, or at least that’s what he’s told me. Amy
She quickly folded it up again and handed it to Noctol, who instantly pinched it in his beak and took off out the window, instantly swallowed up by the darkness. Amy closed the window quietly and laid back on the bed, finally relieved that she could still stay in contact with Kelly and the Race, and Ludevec wouldn’t be able to realize it.
